In an effort to address recent concerns and stabilize relations between the United States and China, a delegation of U.S. senators, led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday. The discussion took place shortly after Schumer criticized Beijing’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. The meeting aimed to address various issues, including economic reciprocity, the fentanyl crisis, human rights, and potential Russian involvement in Ukraine.

Schumer, along with Republican Senator Mike Crapo and other bipartisan lawmakers, expressed disappointment with China’s response to the recent escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas. Schumer urged President Xi and the Chinese people to stand in solidarity with the Israeli people and condemn the cowardly attacks perpetrated against them. He specifically mentioned the lack of sympathy or support for Israel in the foreign minister’s statement.

Earlier in the day, Schumer had a separate meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during which he voiced concerns about Hamas’ unprecedented incursion into Israel and criticized Beijing’s response to the conflict. These discussions took place against the backdrop of rising tensions caused by the Middle East crisis, potentially impacting efforts to improve bilateral ties.

China’s official response to the Israel-Hamas conflict called for an immediate ceasefire and reiterated support for an independent Palestinian state. However, the statement did not mention Hamas by name and referred to the events as an escalation of tensions between Palestine and Israel.

During their meeting with the U.S. delegation, Minister Wang expressed hope that their visit would contribute to restoring positive relations between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of understanding China accurately, viewing it objectively, and managing the existing differences rationally. Wang also acknowledged efforts made recently to stabilize U.S.-China relations, considering them a step in the right direction.

The discussions in China also touched on other pressing matters. Schumer highlighted the need for economic reciprocity and a level playing field for American companies and workers in China. Additionally, concerns regarding Chinese companies’ involvement in the fentanyl crisis and human rights issues were raised. Schumer also expressed the importance of clarifying China’s stance on Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Prior to their visit to Beijing, the senators had engaged in discussions with American business leaders in Shanghai, focusing on the issue of fair competition for American companies operating in China.

The series of diplomatic engagements between the United States and China, including this visit by the delegation of U.S. senators, is part of an ongoing effort by President Joe Biden’s administration to stabilize relations between the world’s two largest economies. These diplomatic initiatives have generated expectations of a potential meeting between President Xi and President Biden at an upcoming major summit in the U.S. next month.

As the meeting with President Xi Jinping concluded, the senators set out to address issues on behalf of Micron Technology Inc., a company with headquarters in Senator Crapo’s home state of Idaho and currently constructing a significant chip production facility in Senator Schumer’s New York.

The visit of the U.S. senators to China represents an opportunity for dialogue, building understanding, and seeking common ground on various critical subjects. Though challenges and differences exist, both countries recognize the significance of stable and constructive relations to promote global stability and economic growth.
